The Surgery Center is located at Stanford’s Outpatient Center campus and has four pavilions, which house many of the specialty care clinics, advanced imaging, and ambulatory surgical services offered by Stanford Healthcare. In FY2015, over 130,000 ambulatory patient visits, over 57,000 advanced imaging studies, and over 29,000 physical therapy appointments took place on the campus.

Stanford Health Care’s Outpatient Surgery Center (OSC) provides comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care to outpatients during the perioperative phase of surgical intervention. Patient care teams working in a high-quality, cost-effective environment are dedicated to the highest level of patient outcomes. The patient care team consists of: Pre-Anesthesia, Pre-Op Unit, Operating Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and the Sterile Processing Department. These areas function collaboratively to provide patients with individualized physical, emotional, and educational support during the perioperative period.

The Stanford OSC’s mission is to be a Center of Excellence for sports medicine and orthopedic ambulatory surgery. Annually, over 7,500 procedures are performed in six state-of-the-art operating rooms, which will grow to eight in January 2016.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Clinical Nurse Manager/Director is responsible for the overall clinical and management functions of the Redwood City Outpatient Surgery Center. He/she directs and coordinates the

activities of the center to assure optimal and appropriate care of patients, consistent with the philosophy and goals of Stanford Health Care. He/she works to continuously improve patient care, operational efficiency, and employee satisfaction.

He/she is responsible for the daily management of center personnel and for developing a high-performance and engaged team, with the appropriate skills and competencies to achieve the short- and long-term goals of the center.

The Clinical Nurse Manager/Director is accountable for the effective delivery of skilled, efficient and compassionate patient care on a 24/7 basis. Responsibilities include coordination of all aspects of patient care; troubleshooting issues; ensuring compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards; managing quality assurance/quality improvement/change management initiatives; ensuring that all safety and risk management requirements are met; supervision of a professional staff of around 70 professionals, both union and non-union, including nurses, technicians, and administrators; administrative, budget, and policy management; and leadership in helping to implement the goals of the health care system and center.

The Clinical Nurse Manager/Director will develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with the entire medical staff at Redwood City and be a role-model and effective liaison for the center and the remainder of the health care system.

The position reports to the Administrative Director of Perioperative Outpatient Services.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

 

 

  • A bachelor of nursing degree from an accredited college or university is required. A master’s degree in nursing, healthcare administration, or other related fields is highly desirable.
  • Current California Registered Nurse (RN) License and Healthcare Provider BLS Certification are required. Additional certifications are highly desirable.

 

EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

  • A professional with significant management experience (8-plus years) in hospitals is required. Minimum of three years of perioperative experience is required. General experience in academic, multi-specialty institutions, with some knowledge of orthopedics, is highly desirable.
  • Experience interfacing with medical and executive leadership in a hospital setting is required. Must be adept at working through issues with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other OR/hospital staff.
  • Knowledge and expertise in all areas of ambulatory-surgery operations (Pre-Op, PACU, OR, and administration) is required.
  • Experience establishing the strategic direction and implementing and managing the business plans for a clinical group.
  • Knowledge of change management, “lean” process, and quality-improvement principles; ability to initiate and implement change conducive to the improvement of the quality and safety of patient-care delivery.
