Job Description

Job Title: Direct Care Staff

Job Objective: Provide direct care to, and supervision of, the residents of TBI Residential and Community Services. Assist the clients in attaining programming goals, house keeping, budgeting, meal preparation, socialization, and appropriate recreation and leisure activities.

Accountable to: House Supervisor and Administration.

Primary Responsibilities:

Innovative Enrichment

  • Provide for Activities of Daily Living and comfort measures according to the written care plan.
  • Provide and/or assist patients when indicated with bathing (includes mouth and teeth, dentures, nails, feet, eyes, ears, nose, perennial care) and grooming (includes hair, shaving, cosmetics, deodorant) on a daily basis.
  • Work with each resident to attain individual program goals including: self-care, vocational training, recreation and leisure time, and community interaction.  Encourage and fosters emotional growth of the residents.
  • Continually look for new and innovative was to provide rehabilitation and learning.
  • Participate in house team meetings, and assist in the development of treatment strategies, and make resident behavioral observations.

Empathy

  • Cultivate an attitude of empathy.
  • Maintain an attitude of trying to put oneself in the shoes of those who we serve.
  • Realize that the residents past affects their life today, with that in mind we need to review the most recent past neuropsychology report, social history etc. Be understanding of what the residents are going through and work with them in the most professional and caring manner.

Safety

  • Maintain a safe living and working place by being mindful of potential risks in our environments and our actions.
  • Ensure that the facilities we manage are neat, clean and free from any type of safety concern.
  • Ensure that all environmental controls are followed through with (ie. locks on refrigerators, locked medication cabinets, supervision during smoke breaks, etc).
  • Report need of adaptive devices, i.e., glasses, hearing aid, cane, walker, etc.
  • Utilize principles of body mechanics when lifting and/or moving patients.
  • Practice universal precautions at all times as described in the universal precautions procedure.

Responsibility

  • Adopt a shared attitude of being willing to accept responsibility for our actions and communicate accountability for both our successes and failures.
  • If all cleaning and other duties are completed the ‘sleep’ overnight will be permitted to sleep between 11pm and 7am unless a client’s needs have to be met, a crisis situation occurs, or other responsibilities need to be fulfilled.
  • If the ‘sleep’ overnight is not awake by 7am it is the ‘awake’ overnight staff person’s responsibility to wake up that individual no later than 7am.
  • Prepare and serve meals according to the weekly menu.
  • Possess general knowledge about the client Behavioral and General Service Plans.
  • When job coaching, ensure that the clients are maintaining respectful boundaries with citizens and their possessions.  Work with the rest of the crew to solve problems as they come up.  Ensure that work sites are neat and clean and free of and safety concerns.
  • Responsible to ensure medications are properly dispensed and documented.  Identify medical needs of residents, and assure the provision of clean clothing, and safe transportation.
  • Ensure that complete and accurate documentation is completed daily (this includes daily client charting, money counts, prn counts and vehicle mileage logs).
  • Demonstrate the ability to be dependable by being on time for work, team meetings, training sessions, and other related activities.
  • Critique team members on performance, identity problems and needed action steps to increase job performance.
  • Have a working understanding of adult foster care rules and licensing requirements and maintain compliance with these regulations.

  • Maintain appropriate client behaviors.  Emphasize and utilize resident strengths while maintaining discipline and logical consequences as needed.  Must possess the ability to effectively implement the non-violent crisis intervention techniques including physical restraints.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a team concept with all employees.  Be able to accept and give constructive criticism, participate in problem solving with team members, and demonstrate a willingness to volunteer for team assignments.  Demonstrate the ability to accept limits and change, not let them interfere with job performance.

Community Collaboration

  • Take each opportunity to give back to the community and to reintegrate our residents into community living.
  • Develop and implement day programming groups and activities.

Required Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Must be dependable, mature, and able to use sound judgment to quickly assess and appropriately respond in a variety of situations.
  3. Must pass criminal history check as specified by licensing agencies.
  4. Must have the ability to drive, possess a valid driver’s license as well as meet the guidelines of the TBI Driving Requirements policy.
  5. Have a working knowledge and abide by TBI Residential & Community Services policies and procedures, health standards, treatment plans, behavior techniques, and diffusion of acting out behavior.
